In an effort to explore the possibilities for providing need based special services to children with disabilities by the Lions Club, Raipur, it was observed that there is a dire need of an institution that can provide such services and  also there was dearth of specialized educators in the state of Chhattisagrh .

To fulfill this gap, Lion Mr K.K.Nayak , initiated to set up an institution of a nature, which will provide all the opportunities to rehabilitate a mentally retarded child as well as develop skilled manpower in the state with whom, the institution can expand the services through out the state. The initiation took the shape of AAKANKSHA Lions School for Mentally Handicapped under the society - "Lions Club Raipur Sewa Samiti"  in the year 1994.

The school has developed gradually in all the areas of the services required in the field of disability and is presently the state level service provider working for the mentally challenged people and other associated conditions. The progression in the areas are developmental intervention, a Special school, Teacher training centre render services as ,  Nodal Agency of National Trust , Vocational Training centre and home based intervention service centre. The organization has carved out a special niche for itself in the state in the field of disability rehabilitation.
